Description

NGC6744 (Caldwell 101) is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Pavo. This galaxy, with its flocculent arms, is considered one of the best nearby analogs to the Milky Way. The presence of the distorted companion, NGC6744A, adds to the parallels with our own galaxy.

This target has a low-surface brightness, so has been challenging to capture well. I've attempted to image it several times in the past with my OSC camera, but always gave up quickly due to the faintness of the target.

This time around, the capture was aided by the addition of luminance data from my new ASI2600MM camera. When the camera arrived, I had seven hours of RGB data taken with my OSC camera and approximately five hours of dual-narrowband data. To test out the new camera, I decided to add a some luminance data (using the UV/IR cut filter with the mono camera). After the first session, I compared the mono luminance data with synthetic luminance extracted from the RGB stack, and found that the two hours of luminance data I had captured compared favourably with the synthetic luminance extracted from seven hours of RGB data. So I proceeded to capture ten hours of mono luminance data. I then captured three more hours of RGB data to make it roughly ten hours each, and proceeded to processing.

The RGB and Luminance stacks were combined, with the addition of Ha data from the dual-narrowband filter (extracted through continuum subtraction). I went through several revisions of the processing to achieve good contrast around the galaxy core. In the end, iterative applications of global MTF and GHS stretches provided a more satisfying result than masked transforms in this case.
