Description

NGC 3718 and NGC 3729 are two galaxies in the constellation of Ursa Major, about 50 Mly from us. They are only separated by 150,000 light-years. Such distance is less than that which separates us from the Magellanic clouds and is probably the reason for the S-shape of NGC3718.
