There are so many images of this region of NGC 7000, but none in my gallery, so I thought it was time to scale the Cygnus wall.

Around 20 LY long and 1,500 LY from earth this is a prominent feature in NGC 7000, the N American Nebula, more specifically the ‘gulf of Mexico’.

Made up of bright hydrogen emissions, this is a hotbed of new star formation, with evidence of the intense radiation creating holes and burning away the molecular gas and dust. I like the glow emanating from the ridge line and the dark fingers of dust.

I had three attempts at this - the first time I miss-framed the image, missing most of the wall (platesolving got me almost there, then failed); the second time I tried 10min subs in a fit of enthusiasm with too much accumulated guiding error. Finally, using 3 m exposures, an acceptable result.

The nights are so short as we approach mid-summer, with just over 2 hrs integration, there is some noise in the background. Still under a 99% moon I’m constantly impressed by my L-eNhance filter, which works wonders.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
