Description

The Omega Nebula (also known as the Swan Nebula, Shoehorn Nebula, Lobster Nebula, M17, and NGC 6618) is an HII region in the constellation Sagittarius. It was discovered by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745 and cataloged by Charles Messier in 1764.
The Omega Nebula is located at a distance between 5,000 and 6,000 light-years, and is about 15 light-years across.

The Eagle Nebula is part of the astronomical object cataloged as M16, that is, object 16 in the Messier catalogue. M16 is made up of the nebula and an open star cluster associated with it, cataloged as NGC 6611, and whose stars can be seen in the different images of M16. It is located in the constellation Serpens (the snake). In one part of the nebula are the "pillars of creation," which form one of the most popular images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The bright emission nebula (HII region) encompassing the entire area is cataloged as IC 4703. The entire complex is 7,000 light-years away.
