Description

A brilliant blue pearl hidden at the center of a celestial oyster, the Iris Nebula (NGC 7023), is a reflection nebula in the constellation of Cepheus. Unlike several of the other nebulae that I have photographed, this one doesn’t emit its own light, but rather reflects the light of nearby stars, thus making it more challenging.

Captured here in true color as the human eye would see, with a Stellarvue SVX102T at F/7 with a QHY 600M camera, in LRGB with about 6 hours of imaging data. Careful processing was required to bring out the details in the nebula itself, as well as the clouds of brownish stellar dust that surround it, without washing out the star colors.
