Description

The Gabriela Mistral nebula is located to the northwest of the Carina nebula.  It lies roughly 9,100 light years away from Earth. The open cluster NGC3324 and its associated emission nebula IC2599 make up the region which gained its colloquial name due to the resemblance to the Chilean poet.

Towards the left of the image is the open star cluster NGC3293.  It lies about 8,000 light years away and contains more than 100 stars brighter than 14th magnitude.  At roughly 12 million years old, it is a relatively young cluster.  The core of the Carina nebula is in the lower right of the image.

The processing challenge in this image was managing the extreme brightness of the Carina nebula core while resolving the finer details on the periphery.  This was primarily accomplished by carefully stretching each channel interdependently using GHS.  I then combined the channels using a dynamic SHO formula that brought out the subtle color variations even in the brightest parts of the image.  Considering the fast f3.6 optics, this was a rare case where I shot narrow band at Gain 0 in order to ensure that I had plenty of dynamic range left to work with.

I am lucky to have the FSQ106 positioned in such an ideal location in Chile.  The data of quality that this rig is capable of is truly amazing.  It is such a joy to work with such clean data, to the point where I have completely abandoned broadband imaging in my back yard.
