Description

NGC 6946 is an intermediate face-on spiral galaxy. It has also been classified as a double bar spiral galaxy.  It is in the constellation Cygnus about 25.2 million light years away.  It is an active producer of stars so it is classified as a starburst galaxy.  10 supernovae have been discovered in NGC 6946 resulting in the galaxy being nicknamed the 'Fireworks galaxy'.

While actually part of the Virgo supercluster of galaxies, it was originally thought to belong to our local group of galaxies.
