Description

Like an ethereal horse emerging from a sea of cosmic clouds, the iconic Horsehead Nebula lies in the constellation of Orion, just to the south of the easternmost star in Orion's belt. The nebula is part of a much larger, active star-forming hydrogen-II region called IC 434, and is approximately 1,375 light years from the Earth. The image was captured with just over 16 hours of data in H-alpha, R, G and B, spread over 6 nights using the Dreamscope 16” Newtonian Astrograph at f/3.75, and an FLI CCD Camera, from the remote southern desert of Utah. A lot of processing was required to bring out additional intricacies in nebulosity behind the super bright stars in the frame.
