Description

I have been wanting to capture the Flaming Star Nebula for some time, and I finally had the opportunity to do so late last October, and I managed to acquire just short of 14 hours of data on it in Ha, R, G and B, and finally got around to processing it. I wanted to bring out as much detail as I could in the Ha structures, while still retaining the wispy bluish reflection nebula in the foreground -- particularly away from the central region towards the left and bottom (in image space). This balance requires careful processing, and I restarted about half-way through as I didn't quite like where I was, and I think that has worked for the better.

The Flaming Star Nebula is an emission and reflection nebula, that lies in the constellation of Auriga as seen from the Earth. It's estimated to be 1,500 light years away, and spans approximately 5 light-years across. The central star that the nebula surrounds, AE Aurigae, is a blue irregular variable star.
