Description

M51 has been a favorite of mine since I 'worked' a summer for my grandmother when I was 14 to save up enough money to buy my first telescope. Although the view though my 10" dobsonian was cool, I was blown away by pictures in the various product catalogs from Orion, Celestron, and the like. Being a teenager, the equipment to do astrophotography was well out of my reach. 30+ years later I spent an evening capturing this target.

I originally planned to do 50/50 L and combined RGB but, after looking at the initial data, I decided that I was happy with what I had.

"The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51a (M51a) or NGC 5194, is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy with a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus. It lies  in the constellation Canes Venatici, and was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy. It is 7.22 megaparsecs (23.5 million light-years) away and 23.58 kiloparsecs (76,900 ly) in diameter." (Source: Wikipedia)
