Description

Saturn with quartet of moons on the morning of Sun 28 Apr 2024 AEST.

Beginning 2024 Saturn campaign with this effort.  A lot of experimentation with WinJUPOS to see which stack combinations produce the most detailed image.  This composite uses 7 out of 10 stacks generated between 4:58 and 5:18 am, a 20-minute derotation centered on 5:08 am.  I was trying to see if Tethys can be detected as it transited Saturn.  There was some light fog around and the seeing only improved after the planet rose above 30 degrees, at that time the moon's shadow has already left Saturn's disk.  Nevertheless, with the help of WinJUPOS reference time function I was able to generate a movie clip showing its egress.

In this view, Tethys is visible as a bright dot just belong the ring plane on lower right, its shadow departing 8 minutes earlier.  The largest moon Titan and icy moon Dione are passing in front of the planet, increasing their distance.  Rhea is approaching Saturn on the far side, displaying its pro-Saturn hemisphere.  Saturn's disk is still only 16.1" in size, in September it will reach 19.2" at an altitude of 62 degrees from Canberra.  Setting wining gibbous Moon illuminated the sky, hence the lighter than usual background for this north up oriented capture.
