Description

The California Nebula, also known as NGC 1499 is a classic emission nebula extending 2.5 degrees in the constellation Perseus. It is approximately 1200 light years away, making it 100 light years long.

This interstellar gas cloud is excited by the nearby energetic O7 star, Xi Persei (also known as Menkib). This star is some 30 solar masses with a surface temperature of 35,000 Kelvin, making it one of the hottest stars that can be seen with the naked eye.

If imagined in three dimensions, in this image,
the California Nebula appears distinctly bowl shaped,
with the rim of the bowl outlined by the bright yellow peaks of gas facing Menkib.
