Description

For my first take (Verisons A and B), I used data from Jan 28, 2022:

Just a quick one-night widefield take on the Orion Nebula with my trusty ZenithStar 61ii.

I took 55 x 15", 55 x 30", 55 x 60", and 55 x 120" and integrated them in AstroPixelProcessor using adaptive local normalization correction.

To help avoid blowing out the core, I manually set HL to 250 in APP (rather than the default 0). In Photoshop, I used a curve that stretched the lower end of the curve (concave-down between 0 and 128.), and the compressed the upper end of the curve (concave-up from 128 to 255). This is somewhat the reverse of typical contrast stretching curves, and it helped bring out the fainter nebulosity while toning down the core of M42.

It's tough to see in the final stretched product, but the data did resolve the Trapezium. (Look at image B.)

When I eventually go and learn PI, I'll properly combine my 15", 30" ,60", and 120" stacks into true HDR. But that's a future night when teaching is done. :-)

For my newer take (Version C), I used data from Jan 26, 2022, combining exposures from 30 seconds up to 600 seconds.

When I get a chance, I'll combine data from both nights.

Title: Detail on the 15" stack

Description: Here's some detail lurking in the 55 x 15" stack. When I take the plunge on PI this summer, there'll be some good data waiting for HDR. :-)

Title: Reprocess (with all data)

Description: I wasn't happy with my last process, so I restacked with everything in one big batch. While the core is blown out, I'm happier with the overall composition.

This version has 13 x 30s + 18 x 60s + 15 x 180s + 14 x 300s + 1 x 600s = 8970s
