Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51 (NGC 5195 & 5195) 51a (M51a), is two interacting galaxies. It lies in the constellation Canes Venatici, and is 32 million light-years away. Actually two interacting galaxies with the smaller one (M51b) on the left moving back and for the thru the larger (M51a) as they merge together.
This image was taken at Marieth Observatory in Central Oregon June 9, of 2003.
