Description

This spiral galaxy, also known as NGC 697, is located 105 million light years away in the constellation of Aries at a declination of +22 degrees.  This galaxy spans 4.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 140,000 light years.

This galaxy looks disturbed.  The core is offset to the right, due to the left side of the disk extending out.  Dust lanes flow violently through the mid-region of the disk, although they are curiously absent (or perhaps just obscured) on the back side of the core.  The disk also appears slightly warped, with the left side of the galaxy appearing slightly more towards edge-on than the right side.
