Description

Due east of the Great Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) lie these two emission nebulae and their associated
open star clusters. The well known Statue of Liberty Nebula (left, south, NGC 3576) has been a favourite
of astrophotographers for some time. It was first discovered in 1834 by the famous astronomer, John
Herschel. The star cluster, NGC 3572, is less well know and its associated nebula even less so. The
strong stellar winds from this cluster have sculpted curious shapes in the nebula, some resembling
tadpoles. (My name, "Southern Tadpoles Nebula" is not commonly recognized but seems appropriate
as the structures resemble those in The Tadpoles, IC 410.) Both these nebulae lie closer to us than
the G.C.N., but are present in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way.

I have used a H+O triband filter here in an effort to display the nebulae’s features more clearly.
