Description

This object is another southern hemisphere highlight. Usually, it’s framed wide to capture more of the surrounding Gum Nebula (Gum 12) and often in narrowband. Here, I’m presenting it up-close and in HaRGB to show the molecular gas and dust component of the cloud as well. I’ve always known it as BBW56, but I’ve learned that the preferred designation is BRAN56. Why? There are two catalogs where the authors’ initials spell out BBW: Bok-Bester-Wade and Brand-Blitz-Wouterloot. Bok-Bester-Wade was first, in 1955, so I guess they get BBW, at least according to SIMBAD. Brand-Blitz-Wouterloot is from 1986, so they get BRAN. (I’ve also seen it as “BBWo.”) Neither catalog is used much outside of a few objects, but I think this one makes sense, as the Gum 12 designation covers so much ground (around 30°×30°), and this is clearly a distinct object at its center that deserves a separate catalog entry. You can see cometary globule CG8 at the far right, pointing toward the Vela SNR like nearly all of the CG’s do. I assume BRAN56 is oriented the same way for the same reason. I think this object may also be a candidate for Extended Red Emission, at least based on appearances, but I can’t find much about it in a brief look at the research. Either way, this is one of my favorite objects, and I’m thrilled to have finally been able to capture a few of its photons.
