Description

I was very fortunate to be able to travel to the Big Island of Hawaii again. The last time I was there, I was unable to do any astrophotography as the weather did not cooperate at all. There were massive winds, often exceeding 60mph.
This time, it appeared like the same story was to repeat itself. Most of the lowlands -- Kona, Hilo were all clouded out. Even the Maunakea visitor center was clouded out for many days in a row from high clouds. This is rather unfortunate to have happen at 9300 feet.
This seemed to be the same story on April 15th 2023. Clouds only parted after the outreach volunteers had packed up for the night. By 10:30 the clouds were fully gone and the skies were spectacular. This is among the greatest places to watch the stars on earth.
I had taken my trusty Borg 71FL (288mm F 3.9) and AM5 mount.
I used a Nikon D810a DSLR.
While a DSLR is not ideal, it appears to have done quite well. The temperatures at night fell down close to 32F and kept the sensor nice and cool.

The AM5 mount tracked wonderfully and without any serious issues. The RMS tracking error was about 0.6-0.8 arc secs which is more than sufficient for this image scale. Of course the seeing in that location probably far exceeded that but I was happy with the way my portable mount performed.

Imaging notes:
Location: MKVIS upper parking lot (9300 feet)
Date: April 15-16 2023
