Description

Messier 88 or NGC 4501 is a spiral galaxy in the 'Virgo Cluster of Galaxies'. It is located in the Coma Berenices constellation and is about 130'000 light years in diameter. It is moving away from us at a speed of 2'000 km/s. The galaxy is classified as SA(rs)b and is also a Seyfert type 2 galaxy. Seyfert galaxies make up about 10% of all galaxies and are among the most intensively studied objects in astronomy. These galaxies are among the most active because they have large supermassive black holes (also called nuclei) at their centre. Seyfert-2 galaxies have a bright core and appear very bright in the infrared. At the centre of M88 is a supermassive black hole with about 80 million solar masses. A supernova has been observed in M88 (SN 1999cl).Source:
