Description

Bode's Galaxy (M81) named after its discoverer, is located about 12 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. The nearby Cigar Galaxy (M82) is the nearest starburst galaxy to us.

Bode's Galaxy’s spiral arms are made up of young, bluish, hot stars formed in the past few million years. A number of dust lanes also can be seen making their way into the centre of the galaxy.Bode's Galaxy’s central bulge contains much older, redder stars. It is significantly larger than the Milky Way’s bulge. There is a black hole of 70 million solar masses at the centre of M81 and is about 15 times the mass of the Milky Way’s central black hole.

The Cigar Galaxy is very bright. It is believed to be 5 times brighter than our Milky Way. The interaction between the Cigar Galaxy and Bode's Galaxy is believed to have caused exceptionally high rates of star formation in the Cigar Galaxy, giving rise to the starburst activity. The rate of star formation is 10x that in normal galaxies like the Milky Way.

In 2010, Jodrell Bank detected some unusual radio activity slightly away from the core of the Cigar Galaxy. It is still unclear what is producing the source of radio waves but whatever it is appears to be moving very fast with respect to the galaxy core; is has an apparent (superluminal) speed of 4 times the speed of light.
