Description

My goal here was to capture some of the extended Ha to the 'left' of M82 as well as good detail in the Ha wings of the galaxy. March 2024 provided some good nights to complete the project - even colour information which I usually hate repeating 3 times.

M82 is the second largest member of the M81 group at a distance of 12 million light years. It is an excellent example of a starburst galaxy, and is one of the closest such galaxies to Earth. It is 5 times more luminous than the Milky Way, with its central region being over 100 times more luminous.

M82 is actually an edge on spiral galaxy, with 2 symmetrical spiral arms visible in NIR.

M82 is being affected by tidal forces from its large neighbour M81. These forces have caused star formation to increase dramatically. Inside the starburst regions of M82, star formation is 10 times that of the entire Milky Way.  M82's rather unique bipolar outflow is thought to be fueled by the energy released by supernovae which occur at a rate of one every ten years.

This object is a favourite of many on Astrobin, including me.
