Description

The central part of this interesting-looking nebula is  NGC 1491 or LBN 704 to 706 or SH2-206, also called the Fossil Footprint Nebula.  It is part of a larger gas cloud in the Perseus arm, at a distance of about 10700 light years. The central part is quite bright and is probably what Herschel discovered. The outer clouds are very faint but still show lovely detail. Just above the nebula there is a faint round smudge of disconnected emission - that is the planetary nebula OU1.

I've selected a somewhat unusual OHS palette, because it gives some more contrast than the more common SHO.
