Description

These Astrobin Debut Objects are a pair of magnitude 14 spiral galaxies located about 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +41 degrees.  Each spans about 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way like diameter of 120,000 light years.  These two galaxies are about the same distance away from us and could be interacting with each other, based upon their disturbed look.

The bottom right galaxy, NGC 5992, has a bright central region and is classified as a starburst galaxy. The disk is disturbed and slightly asymmetric, with faint star streams extending away from the disk.  A bright blue star cloud is seen just below and right of the core.

The top left galaxy, NGC 5993, also has faint star streams.   In addition to the yellow core, I see 2 bright areas in the inner disk at 1 o’clock and 9 o’clock.  These are likely foreground stars, although they could be bright star clouds in the disk itself.
