Description

M1 and Tianguan I have wanted to image M1 for so long, and I do not know why I waited! The Crab Nebula, (catalog numbers NGC 1952 and M1), probably the most intensely studied bright nebula, about 6,500 light-years from Earth. Roughly 6 light-years in diameter, it is assumed to be the remnant of a supernova observed by Chinese and other astronomers first on July 4, 1054. The supernova was visible in daylight for 23 days and at night for almost 2 years. In 1921 it was discovered to be still expanding; the present rate is about 1,100 km (700 miles) per second. Tianguan, also designated as ζ Tauri (zeta Tauri), is a variable and double giant star in the constellation of Taurus. Tianguan visual magnitude is 3. Thanks to its high brightness, Tianguan is clearly visible when from light polluted areas. Tianguan is a visual double star which can be observed only with the help of very large telescopes.  There is less than an arc-second of separation between the two, and far below what I can resolve from the patio. The colors in this image do not match exactly what we would see with our eyes but yield insight into the composition of these objects.
