Description

RCW 58 (from the Rodgers, Campbell and Whiteoak catalogue of galactic HII regions) is a beautifully detailed ring nebula in the southern constellation of Carina. The central star HD96548 (or WR40) is a massive Wolf-Rayet star that ejects material at a high rate. The intense radiation pressure from the hot and extremely luminous central star leads to the elaborate structures that can be observed.

I came across this object by accident whilst imaging various dark nebula in the vicinity. Using an unmodified Nikon camera, the hydrogen emission was barely visible, but it was enough to prompt a repeat visit using a monochrome camera and H-alpha filter.

For an attractive object, RCW 58 seems to have been relatively rarely imaged on Astrobin. Whilst having a relatively low surface-brightness, it is large enough (8 x 5') to be rewarding target even with a small 'scope. I did try for some OIII data as other images show a nice oxygen outer shell, but with my setup even after a full night of imaging this was barely perceptible and hasn't been included.
