Description

The Vela Molecular Ridge is a complex of multiple clouds of nebulosity and star formation. It lies
between the Gum Nebula (GUM 12, outside right of frame, 1470ly) and the Carina-Sagittarius spiral
arm of our galaxy. We see it stretched end-on, with the closest sections (VMC A, C, & D) at
2,300-3,300ly away, while the furthest sections lie over 6,000ly away. It spans across Vela into
neighbouring Puppis. This image shows mostly sections VMC C and VMC D.

I have used a H+O triband filter in an effort to display the nebulosity of this region of the sky. It is a
complex area with numerous regions of interest. It is also an area of dense star fields, and I have
de-emphasized these to allow the nebulosity to shine through.
