Description

Last night when imaging NGC2264 I noticed a blue glow on the right hand side of the image. It turned out to be a real object, IC447.  Since both NGC2264 und IC447 fit on the same image frame I decided to integrate on them tonight. In contrast to NGC2264, IC447 is a reflection nebula.  Reflection nebulae are usually blueish because the scattering is more efficient for blue light than red (this is the same scattering process that gives us blue skies and red sunsets).

For a change this time I didnt use my usual UHC filter, but rather the rarely used  IPAS LPS-P2 filter. It doesnt filter the new LED streetlights of the nearby villages very well, but since it was a dark night, it was OK. Also I was interested to see if after the final photometric color calibration there would be any difference in the color of NGC2264 wrt my image with the UHC filter. Yes, there is a difference: with the UHC filter there are greenish and blueish parts of the nebula, whereas with the IDAS filter these regions are mostly white. Also star colors are less pronounced, and maybe more natural. To me this looks even more beautiful. It wont be my last picture with the IDAS LPS-P2.

I used a lower ISO value of 12800 with the IDAS filter because there is more light coming through compared to the UHC filter and I didnt want to overexpose the image with a exposure time of 180secs. As a result the noise in the image is a bit lower.
