The globular cluster M53 is one of the more distant and faint clusters in the Messier catalog. It was discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1775 and cataloged by Charles Messier in 1777. It contains about 500,000 stars, mostly old and low-mass. It has a diameter of about 220 light-years and orbits the Milky Way at a distance of about 60,000 light-years from the center. It is located in the constellation Coma Berenices, near the border with Virgo. It is best observed with a telescope in the spring months.
