This was at least my fifth or sixth time collecting data on the Horsehead Nebula, but now equipped with a full frame sensor and just 480mm of focal length, I had to try something different to make it interesting. I decided to go "portrait mode" and capture all three stars of Orion's Belt along with the Horsehead and Flame nebulae. Overall, I’m happy with the composition since it offers a different perspective of the region. During initial post-processing, I was unhappy with the SHO stars, so I collected some RGB data to produce a more pleasing starfield.

When I started looking at the individual Ha subs for this target, I finally realized, after over 150 hours of imaging with the QHY600, that I had reflections in my imaging train.

Fortunately, a little black paint on the spacers fixed the reflection issue, but I still had a lot of extra work to do in post-processing for the targets I had already finished collecting data on. While I think I've done an adequate job mitigating their impact on the final image, I can still see hints of them around the image. But that is okay...they serve as a reminder for me to dial in my imaging train after any modification.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
