Description

The SN is magnitude 14.9 and was classified spectroscopically as a Type II (core collapse) SN.  This SN happened about 21m years ago and the light just reached us.  It is the closest SN to earth in about a decade.

Here is a side-by-side view of the two very lightly processed data sets.  The SN is the bright white star in the top galaxy arm about half way through.  It hides the smaller hydrogen region that you can see in the left image.

The image on the left is from Bortle 4 captured on 5/12.
The image on the right is from Bortle 7 captured on 5/20. (not much integration time).

Here is also a report on the SN: https://earthsky.org/todays-image/supernova-in-m101-pinwheel-galaxy-closest-in-a-decade-how-to-see/#:~:text=A%20new%20supernova%20in%20the,telescopes%20for%20a%20few%20months.
