Description

We finally had some clear skies here in MI, a glorious total of 8 hours in 2 evenings, so I was able to test some new gear. I've been thinking about using OSC for my RGB frames and then using Lum, Ha, S2 and O3 mono data to simplify capture and processing so I bought an ASI 2600 MC Pro. I also traded in my 20 year old Canon 200 mm f2.8 USM and put the funds towards an ASKA 200 mm f4. This is my first target NGC1499 shot over two nights 90 mins through an LPRO (I'm in Bortle 7 skies) and 120 mins through an LExtreme. At first I was going to go through my normal regime of layering Red and Ha etc then I realized why not just add the starless LExtreme data to the RGB stars. So I did that and I thought it worked 'extremely' well!! I did use a layer of my LEXT stars as luminance to tame the RGB stars but I'm not even sure that was necessary.

Anyway I was pleased with the results and I can only imagine it will be even better in darker skies I did a side by side with the RGB data shot using mono + filters and I really couldn't tell the difference.

Just a thought on the Askar. This is a very sturdy package it's far more substantial than the canon and physically/mechanically much better suited for astro work. I haven't got the autofocus to work consistently but I'm sure I will get there. Even on the APS C chip I'm not getting pinpoint stars to edge of field but it's certainly no worse than any of my other APO refractors and they are at f5 not f4.
