Description

M17 has a maximum altitude of only 25deg at my site. When it rises above the trees right now there are only 2.5 hours before morning twilight. This make it a challenging target.

Since I dont have RGB Filters, I used Halpha, SII und OIII narrowband filters instead. When combining them to a color image with Siril, I have first set the colors to the true colors of these emission lines and used just a little adjustment in the saturation und dark levels. I like the resulting warm colors.

The second version was inspired by another astrobin user. Even though in Siril it is not possible to combine several images into one channel with weights, it is possible to use the three narrowband images several times with several colors (different or the same) to compose an RGB image. For the final image I used

R: Ha, SII

G: Ha, OIII

B: 2xOIII

After some color processing in rawtherapee, I find the result very beautiful.

The third version was processed with the channel mixer of rawtherapee, which is ideal for weighted combination of images into the color channels.

Description: This image was processed differently. I composed a simple RGB image with Ha, SII and OIII in Siril. Then I used the channel mixer of rawtherapee to redistribute Ha, SII and OIII to the RG and B channels as follows
R: 40% Ha, 90% SII, -5% OIII (!)
G: 37% Ha, 0% SII, 43% OIII
B: 0% Ha, 0% SII, 100% OIII
I find that rawtherapees channel mixer is a very convenient tool to create beautiful color images.
