Description

PGC 47847 or the Fourcade-Figueroa object is a large (11.5 x 1.7') object in Centaurus. It is faint and has a very low surface brightness, is slightly blue in colour and shows some irregularities in brightness. It is thought to be a remnant - perhaps a spiral arm - of a galaxy that collided with nearby Centaurus A (C77) approximately 500 million years ago. The core of the galaxy (NGC 5237) also lies nearby.

Altogether an unusual object that has only been imaged a couple of times on Astrobin.
