Description

A new supernova 59 million light years away in the spiral galaxy NGC 4647, discovered by Koichi Itagaki on 16 April 2022, shines brighter than its host galaxy's core. I was lucky enough to get two clear nights to capture this impressive phenomenon.

Supernova SN2022hrs shows up in the left side of the second large galaxy from the left.

Captured over two nights in April/May 2022.

Total integration time: 4h 15min.

--------- Alt Text -----------

A sparse star field featuring several galaxies.

Most prominently featured in the upper left are M60, a yellowish elliptical galaxy with a bright core growing softer toward the edges, and a smaller spiral galaxy appearing slightly blue with a yellow core. In the left spiral arm of this galaxy is a large, bright blue/white star, which is the recently born supernova SN2022hrs.

In the lower center are two small galaxies - a tiny elliptical, and what appears to be a spiral viewed edge-on.

In the right of the image is one more large elliptical galaxy and several smaller, fainter elliptical galaxies.

Several of the brighter stars in the image have a blue hue and large diffraction spikes, which is a result of the image having been taken with a Newtonian reflector telescope.
