Description

The Vela Supernova Remnant is estimated to have formed around 11,000 years ago, when a Type II
supernova occurred about 900ly away. It was this supernova that helped astronomers to determine that
they produce neutron stars. It is one of the closest SNRs to us. It contains the Pencil Nebula, NGC 2736,
that lies 815ly away, and is seen as the short, bright streak in the centre, left of this image.

I have used a H+O triband filter in an effort to display the nebulosity of this region of the sky.
