Description

The "Eye of God": NGC 7293, Caldwell 63, a.k.a. the "Helix Nebula" or even the "Eye of Sauron", is a beautiful jewel found in the Aquarius constellation. This planetary nebula is one of the closest to Earth and is located 650 light-years away and has 2.87 light-year radius. It is formed by an intermediate to low-mass star, which sheds its outer layers near the end of its evolution. The remanent stellar core will become a white dwarf star, but is glow is so energetic that it causes the previously expelled gases to brightly fluoresce. Note that outer layers resemble a DNA "helix", so one of the names of this object is derived from this fact.

Planetary nebulas are unrelated to planets, but as they have a characteristic rounded shape, the name stuck.
