Description

Immediately to the north north west of the Great Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) lies this pair of emission
nebulae and their associated open star clusters. They are members of the very large Carina molecular
cloud complex, designated Sodroski 62. Both are H-II regions indicating that the gas cloud is being
irradiated by high energy UV light from hot, young stars.

NGC 3247 is also catalogued as GUM 29 and RCW 49. It’s common name derives from its likeness to a
whirling dervish, as seen from above. It lies some 13,700ly away, and is estimated at 300-400ly across.
It contains over 2,200 stars, at least 200 of which have dust disks. This is considered a star forming
region and is one of the brightest H-II regions in our galaxy.

The common name for NGC 3199 is an obvious assoication. James Dunlop first observed it in 1826. Its
distinctive shape was originally thought to be a bow shock-wave, but recent studies have discounted this.
It hosts one of the fairly rare Wolf-Rayet stars, WR 18.

I have imaged this with a H+O tri-band filter to display the nebulae’s features more clearly.
