Description

And now, for one of my favorite and most-inspiring targets...

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula located in the constellation Orion. It is a small, dense cloud of gas and dust that is silhouetted against the bright emission nebula IC 434 and next to the Flame Nebula NGC 2204.  The Nebula is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, which is a region of active star formation.

The nebula is approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth, and was first discovered in 1888 by Williamina Fleming in plates from the Harvard College Observatory.

Being one of my favorite targets for the RASA with a OSC camera, I have imaged it each of the three years I've been in this hobby.  It's always exhilarating to see that first image download over USB, but getting trouble-free integration time is a challenge:  This target arrives just prior to the winter season, when we have poor seeing and winds that badly affect this giant RASA sail.  And don't even get my started on Alnitak!
