NGC 5236 is another name for **Messier 83** or **M83**, also known as the **Southern Pinwheel Galaxy**¹²³. It is a **barred spiral galaxy** with a grand design structure in the constellation Hydra¹². It was discovered by **Nicolas Louis de Lacaille** in 1752 at the Cape of Good Hope¹.
NGC 5236 is one of the closest and brightest barred spiral galaxies in the sky, and can be seen with binoculars¹. It has an apparent magnitude of **7.54** and lies at a distance of about **15 million light years** from Earth². It has a diameter of about 55,000 light years and contains about 100 billion stars³.
NGC 5236 is part of the **Centaurus A/M83 Group**, a nearby group of galaxies that also includes the peculiar galaxy Centaurus A¹. NGC 5236 has interacted with some of its neighbouring galaxies, especially NGC 5253, a dwarf galaxy that lies near it¹. These interactions have triggered intense star formation in both galaxies, making them starburst galaxies¹.
NGC 5236 has hosted six supernovae in the last century: SN 1923A, SN 1945B, SN 1950B, SN 1957D, SN 1968L and SN 1983N¹. It also has a large number of star clusters, including globular clusters and young star clusters³.
