Description

This is really an amazing galaxy.  It's known as a starburst galaxy, because of its exceptionally high rate of  new star formation, more that 10 times what we have in our own Milky Way.  It's also 5 times as luminous.  It's believed that the gravity larger neighbor, M81, causes tidal forces within M82 that cause a lot of this, including the apparent deformation of the disk.  We see it  from the side.  I I understand it correctly the red splash in the center is the supergalactic wind that is energized by the hot new stars in the core and glows in Hydrogen Alpha and near IR.  M82 is also noteworthy for having a high rate of supernova.
