Description

M37 is the brightest and richest open cluster found in the constellation Auriga. Auriga, latin for 'chariaioteer' was orginally found by Ptlomey in the 2nd century.

M37 was originally discovered by Hodierna of Italy sometime before 1654, it was rediscovered by Messier in 1764. M37 resides about 4500 light years from Earth and is an antipodal direction as seen from  Earth.

The orange colored star at the 11:00 O'clock position is a variable star call HD39045 (VAR 440), it is believed to be a binary star system. HD39045 (VAR 440) is a naked eye object and can be seen unaided in decent seeing conditions.
