Description

NW of the main cloud of the LMC lies the interesting, very large star-forming region, designated
LHA 120-N 11 (N11). Prominent in this complex is the Bean Nebula, NGC 1763. the large, kidney-
shaped nebula shown above centre in this image. The nebula, and its associated embedded
open star cluster, form part of a large cosmic super bubble which is N11. The centre of this
region is dominated by the star cluster, NGC 1761. Its hot, bright, young (5 Myo) stars are
generating stellar winds that are causing the super bubble to expand. N11 is approx. 1,000 ly
across, and lies 163,000 ly away, at the outer edge of the LMC.

Associated with this super bubble are the nebulae, NGC 1769 (SE of the Bean Nebula), and
NGC 1760 (S of the Bean Nebula). Further out, to the NE, lies the nebula NGC 1770, and to the
E is the open star cluster, NGC 1776. These latter do not form part of the N11 super bubble
complex.
