I have multiple data sets that have more than one main object in FOV. Can I use same data set for multiple images and submit them for IOTD without them being disregarded as "same data"? |

It's difficult to say. I would say that if you dataset, and posted two different crops (one crop for one object and one crop for another) it would be bending the rules and it shouldn't be allowed. In that case you should post a single image, with two revisions for the two crops if you wish to show the crops. However, you said multiple datasets. If you imaged M81 one night, and M82 another night, for instance, and then assembled it into a mosaic, so that M81 is a dataset and M82 is a distinct dataset, then I would say you can post M81 and M82 as two separate images only if you don't post the mosaic. If you post the mosaic, then the single frames should be revisions. I hope this was clear! |

I understand your positioning but I would disagree. Different objects in the same data set may require different post processing techniques. For example I have M81 and M82 in the same data. I should be allowed to use the same data but process those two objects differently. They do require different handling. We are submittiny Images for IOTD.. not the Data. |

What I'm saying is: If you submit an image with both of them, and then also submit them separately, it would perceived as an attempt to game the system and improve your chances. However, if you only submit the two images, it could be argued that they are different datasets indeed, even tho they were acquired at the same time and with the same equipment, simply because the focal length and sensor size allowed it. |

Thanks for quick responses. My understanding is as below based upon your respose: I can post two separate images of two separate objects using the same dataset (same time, location, exposures, equipment etc) as long as I don't post an image with both objects. |

It will be great if you can help with revisions as well. Once I submit an image for IOTD, I cannot submit any of its revision even if I add more data to it. What is the guideline there? If I add more data then should I submit that as separate image? I had to submit my Lion Nebula image again as a separate image (https://astrob.in/78pnzo/0/) after adding a different set of LRGB. Was that considered "same data"? |

Hi Imran, the reason why this is not precisely specified is that I don't have a precise line to draw the definition. The closest I can come up with is:
In general, if you feel that a process is not finished, just wait before publishing or submitting it (you can submit for IOTD/TP consideration up to 30 days from the initial publication of an image). You can leave it in the staging area until it's ready. I do realize, tho, that this doesn't work because often we come back to revisit a project many months later, or usually the next year. We could also agree that if you come back to add data next year, it's still counts as a new "project", because you wanted to image that target again, but why not use the old data from last year? Try to take in the spirit of this rule: the objective is to not saturate the IOTD/TP queues and overwork the volunteer staff, so just common sense:
Perhaps now it's a bit clearer? |
