Description

Due north of the LMC’s main galactic bar lie several regions of considerable complexity. As this region
is at the leading edge of the LMC as it moves through space, its interaction with the interstellar medium
has spawned a menagerie of objects, including emission and reflection nebulae, star clusters,
“superbubbles”, supernova remnants, and so on.

This image centres on the regions known as N51 (lower right), N57 (lower centre), N55 (upper centre),
and the Dragon’s Head Nebula (NGC 2035, lower left). In the centre of the image are the open star
clusters with compact centres (NGC 2004, 2006 - double-centred, and 2002), with NGC 2003 at top right,
and NGC 2041 at far left centre. To the left of N57 is the small circular H-II emission nebula, NGC 2020.
Other small open clusters are also present. In the upper left is the compact cluster, NGC 2030, which
lies close to the supernova remnant, N63A.

There is a lot more in this field, much of which I haven’t been able to identify. The LMC is indeed a rich area
for DSO mining! Note: The nebulae catalogue numbering derives from Heinze's "Catalogue of Emission
Nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud".
