Description

Two days ago I took my first steps on the frozen sea. The towns and settlements in Greenland are isolated and there are no roads connecting them. As someone who has no boat, the sea ice is a big deal as it allows me to actually walk around and explore nearby places outside of the small island that Uummannaq is. Many locals go hunting and fishing with the sled dogs and snowmobiles and travel to other neighbor settlements. The ice also makes it possible to escape the light pollution of the island. There are 1400 people living here and its extremely difficult to find a good spot to photograph the aurora in the southern side of the sky where its located most of the time.

Walking too close to the icebergs is by no means recommended, especially this early on. The sea ice is typically soft around them and may not be able to keep a person on the surface.

UPDATE: The iceberg on the right flipped over around 10 days after this photo. The sea ice is soft around the icebergs and walking around them is super risky.
