Description

NGC4435 and NGC4438 are interacting galaxies which lie in a cluster of galaxies known as the Markarian's Chain.  They were nicknamed "The Eyes" by the 19th century observer, L.S. Copeland.  NGC4435 (mag 10.9; dia 3 arcmin) is oval with a bright core and appears completely free of any tidal disturbances from its neighbor.  NGC4438 (mag 10.1; dia 9.3 arcmin) looks as if it is the result of a merger between two galaxies.  These interacting galaxies lie in the heart of the Virgo cluster and appear to be about 100,000 light-years apart today.  It is estimated that they approached one another within 16,000 light-years in the cosmic past. They are about 52 million light-years away.

This is actually a combination of data I recently took and data I collected a year ago.  The combination greatly helped me to bring out some of the features, particularly that of NGC4438.  Given my typical sky conditions, I was delighted with this outcome.
