Description

I have long been fascinated by the RCW catalogue.  One of the more spectacular RCW objects is RCW114, or the Dragon's Heart.  There are one or two specular images of this very faint object on astrobin, either in Ha, OSC or a combination thereof.  There are not many with the full narrowband SHO set.  In fact, I couldn't find any.  So I thought to get it a shot.  With one night per filter using the Nikon F2 200mm lens.

With there is little [OIII] in the wisps, [SII] is present to complement the Ha.  I do like the way the Dragon's Heart sits next to a very dark lane in the Milky Way.  There is also an Ha feature across the dark land from RCW 114 that isn't listed on my maps, but is easily the strongest Ha signal in this image.  To me, it looks a bit like a Horned Owl (or bat?) in flight.  It surprises me a little that it isn't featured more in catalogues or in images on Astrobin.

I suspect this area is overlooked a little as people hop from the Dragons of Ara (just off the the South) and the Prawn Nebula (just off to the North).

But I think there is much to explore here, and I plan to return with more data - and possibly a better colour scheme the HSO.  [Although the traditional SHO looks very insipid]. At least its something a little different.

60 x 300sec in each of Ha SII and OIII.
