HaRGB image designed to illustrate the extent of the 'foreground' intra-galactic Ha signal from the Milky Way through which we view M31.

The data were collected from three locations: Ha, Charente, Western France; RGB, Hutton-Le-Hole, North Yorkshire Moors, UK; RGB, Abingdon, UK.
The first two data sets were taken with a Samyang 135, while the third was with a WO Redcat, 51. The Redcat data were crucial as we found they gave a much better rendition of M31 itself, most particularly the colours - the RGB Samyang data were somewhat lacking in blue for reasons we don't understand.

Total integration ~13hrs.

The most challenging part of the data acquisition was unsurprisingly the Ha (here imaged at f2). This required the B3 skies of the Charente - even the slightest amount of moon light was enough to remove the contrast in the Ha background.

We also tried and essentially failed to image the recently discovered Oiii arc adjacent to M31. Our conclusion is the B4 skies of Hutton-Le-Hole where we attempted this over a new moon are simply not dark enough. (The images showed the Oiii signal but with insufficient S/N to be useful.)

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
