Description

Sh2-155 (Cep): - The Cave Nebula

October 13, 2023 is a surprisingly clear day, the announced cold front passage is a long time coming. The short-term forecasts from several weather services, their satellite animation and also the high-altitude 24/7 webcams on our mountains, which provide a good long-distance view of what may be coming from the west, give hope for clear skies well into the second half of the night. And all around the new moon!

The nights are now much longer and you can start taking photos earlier. My recording series starts at 9:15 pm 6 hours of exposure time are planned for the "Cave Nebula" (Sh 2-155), knowing that the clouds will arrive at 3 am at the latest. I set my alarm for 3 am, but I wake up at 2:30 am and immediately see that the clouds are coming over the mountains and my camera can hardly see anything.

I log in via VNC to the RasPi 4 (with Astroberry OS) that is doing its job outside and look at the latest pictures. The last 23 images of 180 planned are unusable. At least 157 individual images remain, each with a 2 min exposure time. After stacking with Siril, things look pretty sobering in the asinh auto stretch: lots of stars, hardly any nebula. In fact, the elaboration becomes tedious. I have to reorganize several times, do something differently, start all over again and use different software because otherwise some details cannot be worked out.

Here I'll show what I've been able to work on so far ... and now I'm taking a creative break.

I love the heaven -
and the heaven loves me.
