Description

The Eagle Nebula is about 7,000 light-years away from Earth. Within the nebula, the Pillars of Creation are three prominent finger-like columns of dust and gas. They are an active stellar nursery with dense regions of gas and dust where new stars are in the process of learning. The height of the tallest pillar is about four light-years. The Pillars of Creation owe their distinctive appearance to the erosion caused by the intense radiation and stellar winds from nearby massive stars.
